Learning in Summer Camp

At the Washington Street Clubhouse, staff member, Che Salazar, ran a multi-media
music appreciation class. Members, 6-13 years, were engaged and
participated in a rich and diverse cultural experience through media. Che has been using
You Tube videos of the roots of Jazz, Sesame Street, Salsa dancing and
more to help campers understand where certain beats and music genres got
their start. Last week's session included a hands on drumming portion
with a Salsa class lead by local volunteers! By the end of the program
all participants were able to name at least one famous musician from
that genre and demonstrate the dance they learned.
At the Gene-Mack Clubhouse, staff member, Chris Vanlenten runs a Folklore program. Chris' folklore program invites youth 6-13 to learn about ancient fables
and folk tales using the computer lab and You Tube. Participants learn
about the common themes in folk stories and then work in teams to create
their own story to share at the end of summer camp. After a session all
of the participants are proud of the work they have done on their
stories and are eager to share their plot lines.
