December 2010 Member of the Month

Mya Winslow

Mya Winslow is December’s Member of the Month because she is a prime example of what we, as youth workers, hope to achieve. When she first became a member at the Gene Mack Clubhouse she was self seeking. Yet every year that has passed we have seen her grow into a magnificent young woman. Instead of being self-seeking she would give anything for her friends whether it is a helping hand, a crying shoulder, or a turn in the games room. Her joyful exuberance has a way of making everyone feel welcome. In addition she uses her intelligence and her leadership to mentor younger members, especially in regards to their homework. Not to mention she has an infectious determination.

Staff Reflections on Mya Winslow:

Bougie: Mya is a very bright young lady. She is also very artistic and a pleasure to have at the club. When I first started here she was the first kid to make me feel welcome. Mya is always happy and willing to help out around the club. She deserves this award because she is such a great kid. Keep it up, Mya!

Bruce: Mya Winslow is a wonderful presence in the club. When she joins and activity or program she goes all out. She is loud and exciting and a wonderful person to have on your team. Congratulations Mya it has been exciting watching you develop during your time here at the Gene Mack Clubhouse, BE GREAT!

Christine: Mya is a great kid. She is always on top of her homework, without fail. She is consistently there for her friends. Nine times out of ten she has a radiating smile on her face. She is a pleasure to have around and it’s been great to see her grow over the past 1.5 years. Congrats Mya, you definitely deserve this honor!

Christopher: Mya Winslow has an infectious exuberance that follows her in all she does. What is most admirable in Mya, however, is her ability to pick herself up and keep trying even in the face of adversity. Mya's positive attitude reminds us that success doesn't mean always winning; it means chasing victory even after disappointment.

Danielle: Mya is a very sweet girl. I admire her determination to always want to be the best, at whatever she is doing. She is very strong willed, and that is a trait I admire within her. She is very helpful and always willing to go the extra mile to help others. Keep up the good work!

Gio: Mya Winslow is a very outgoing and bright young lady. She is very helpful, caring and she can put a smile on anyone’s face. She is also a very good kid to have around. Good job, Mya!

Katie: Mya is really good at helping other kids—during open art and homework time. She is extremely positive. She is so sharing. She is also very respectful of other members and staff members. It’s nice that you are always there to lend a helping hand. I love that you are integrated in every aspect of the club.

Manny: Mya is a very fun loving person. She always gets her homework done with little guidance and is very helpful to others. She is not shy to athletic competition.
